FAC Update
FAC (Fundacion
Agroecologica Cotobrusena) is a local San Vito area NPO (Nonprofit
Organization) formed to promote organic agricultural production at the small and family
farm level. Currently the members grow marketable crops like coffee, plantains, Caña
India and hardwoods.
Coffee
The world and local coffee markets are seriously depressed
making it difficult at best for small, non-corporate growers in Costa Rica to sell at a
level of profitability which would enable them to reinvest the necessary amount to sustain
their enterprise. During the recent past, many growers have turned to cattle raising or
have closed up their coffee farms and moved to the central valley and the
San Jose area to
seek employment.
FAC has just begun organically processing coffee in their new facility built with aid from
Canada.
FAC members' coffee and my brand of coffee, TicoOrganico,
are still in the process of obtaining Organic certification - cost is
prohibitive at this point. We are developing markets to deliver our high quality coffee beans to buyers worldwide. Inquiries
welcomed.
Hardwoods
The marketing strategy of hardwoods at
present is for local sales with the goal of expanding the market range to the U.S. More
information will be posted on the types of hardwood being produced and dates of
availability for those who may be interested in a purchase.
